West of Fernie, in the Kootenay River Valley (Trench), the land is largely populated with splendid, towering ponderosa pines. They are wild-fire resistant so often stand alone as the other trees and brush have been burnt. They are susceptible to lightening so often have many leaders (tips) as this one has. I watch for unique "character" ponderosas and pines as we travel and either photograph them or take note of their uniqueness. This one was named on Facebook by a Scottish Highlands friend.
