Mosaics
An inukshuk is a stone cairn or signpost found from Alaska to Greenland above the Arctic Circle. It is considered an emblem of the Canadian north. For years, we have had a small inukshuk Harman built in our yard. I was drawing it to do a mosaic, when I heard that the Canadian artist I admire, Kenojuak Ashevak (1927-2013) had died. Kenojuak was regarded as one of the most notable pioneers of modern Inuit art, especially print-making. Although the far north is fairly monochromatic most of the year, I wanted the background full of brilliant colours. While working, I began to think of the cairn as representing Kenojuak, herself. With two boulders resembling feet and the outstretched arms, it represented the artist herself, pointing the direction for followers to go. The glass on the inukshuk is stacked, giving prominence to the figure.
