In the late afternoon or evening north of Fernie, you can see the shadow image on Hosmer Mountain of a horse and rider with a person beside them. There is a legend relating these people to the discover of coal in the valley and a curse which was placed on the city. Fernie suffered devastating fires, floods and a mine disaster in the early 20th Century. There was a curse-lifting ceremony in 1964.
